4.Location of the victim: Village: Chandipur, Hakimpur Police Station, District-Dinajpur
5.Date of occurrence: 13.07.2011 at about 7 a.m.
6.Name of the perpetrators:
1) Mohammad Hadiuzzaman (20)
2) Mohammad Rubel Hossain (25)
3) Mohammad Habibur Rahman (55)
4) Mohammad Milon Meah (45)
5) Mohammad Ziarul Islam (38)
6) Mohammad Shahidul Islam (48), and more unknown 5-7 perpetrators. All accused are from Birampur Upaziila of Dinajpur District.
7.Date of investigation : On 5th August,2011
8.Name of the complainant : Niren Chakraborty ( father of the victim)
9.Case Number: Niren Chakraborty lodged FIR at Hakimpur Police station on 17.07.2011 ( Hakimpur P.s., case No.11 dated 16.07.11, under section 7/30 of Nari-O-Shishu Nirjatan Ain,2003 ( Children and Woman Repression Act)
BRIEF DESCRIPTION :
As per allegations lodged by Mr.Niren Chakraborty it is clear that the victim girl had gone to attend her Pilot school on 13.07.2011 at about 7. a.m. but she did not return at her home as she was abducted by above noted perpetrators on way to cemented road with the leadership of Mohammad Hadiuzzamn. Mr. Niren Chakraborty went to the house of perpetrator No.3 Mohammad Habibur Rahman who confessed his guilt and assured father of the victim to return back his daughter, but he along with other co-perpetrators refused to return back his minor daughter.
As the victim was not handed over to Mr.Niren Chakraborty as per commitment of the other perpetrators he lodged first information report (FIR) before Officer in Charge of Hakimpur police station at Dinajpur district on 17.07.2011 under section 7/30 of Nari-O-Shishu Nirjatan Ain,2003 against above six perpetrators to recover the victim, but the officer charge of Hakimpur did not recover the school girl from the custody of the kidnappers nor arrested any perpetrators till 5th of August,2011.
I communicated with the Superintendent of Police, Dinajpur and the Officer in charge of Hakimpur police station on 7th of August,2011 and they all informed me that the perpetrators would be arrested very soon and police did not as yet identify where the victim residing. In the meantime perpetrators are trying to manufacture anti dated documents to show that the victim has got consent to be converted as Muslim. This mal-practice should be stopped by law enforcing agencies to protect the chastity of the Hindu girl.
Just now I came to know that one of the perpetrators has been arrested by police after the intervention by Bangladesh Minority Watch from Dhaka.

Did the ace south Indian actress Nayantara convert to Hinduism: A different angle:
Just recently, a sensation of sorts happened when heroine Nayantara was reported as becoming a Hindu.
While the reasons for the decision could be anything, the truth is Nayan has not converted to Hinduism.
Well, logically speaking, that’s not possible since Hinduism is not a religion but more like a ‘way of living’.
Even Swami Vivekananda had said that Hinduism is just a way of life and there is no process called conversion in it to Mr Palmer, a denizen of Detroit way back in 1893.
Coming to Nayan, the apt way to describe her initiative is she has ‘adopted’ Hinduism. The doctrines of Hinduism say one is born a Hindu or not. There is no system called conversion and religious tolerance with flexibility has always been high in this community. So folks.. Nayantara is definitely a Hindu but not a converted Hindu.
There is no process like Baptism in Hinduism. Even Hindusim never asks for name change as there are many Lenins, Newtons (one is the famous regression therapist) and Mastans in Hinduism. This is not to question the faith of Nayan but a simple analysis which proves that no one can ‘convert’ to Hinduism but ‘adopt’ it completely

13 (thirteen) Christians in Tamil Nadu Adopts Hinduism, following the ace Southern Actress Nayanthara (Diana Mariam Kurian)..
When it comes to fan frenzy and star worship, not many can beat the Tamils. Be it the culture of constructing a temple for heroines. Breaking thousand coconuts, doing ‘Jaagaarams’ near temple, visiting holy places etc just to ensure that their favourite hero’s film scores a hit are some of the examples which show their devotion. Now, a similar devotion has been shown by a group and this time, it is for a heroine.
She is none other than Nayantara and now it is heard that about thirteen hardcore fans of Nayan have gone ahead and taken Hinduism. The reason, Nayan has converted to Hinduism. A staff member of the Chennai diocese leaked out this information which has caused quite a stir.
The person revealed “These are regular visitors to the St Thomas Syrian Catholic Church in Padi. Not sure when it happened but we got news that these thirteen have converted to Hinduism following their favorite actress’s footsteps.”
Few analysts on religion said “Usually Hindus tend to get influenced to convert into Christianity. But with the Nayan effect, the Christians are turning into Hindus. This goes to show that irrespective of her activities and controversies, there are some blind fans who love to walk in her footsteps.”

ANSWERING THE BIBLE:
Q. Does the Heaven made by the God of the Bible contain frightening looking beasts?
Ans: yes.
To understand this let us look a the following verses from the Bible:
21st Century King James Version (KJ21 Bible):
(i) 6and before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four living beings full of eyes in front and behind.
7And the first being was like a lion, and the second being like a calf, and the third being had the face of a man, and the fourth being was like a flying eagle.
8And each of the four living beings had six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within; and they rested not day and night, saying,"Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come!" [Revelation 4: 6-8]
(ii) 6And I beheld, and lo, in the midst of the throne and the four living beings, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth.
7And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him that sat upon the throne.[Revelation 5: 6-7]
New Century Version:
(i) 6 Also before the throne there was something that looked like a sea of glass, clear like crystal.
In the center and around the throne were four living creatures with eyes all over them, in front and in back.
7 The first living creature was like a lion. The second was like a calf. The third had a face like a man. The fourth was like a flying eagle.
8 Each of these four living creatures had six wings and was covered all over with eyes, inside and out.
Day and night they never stop saying:
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
He was, he is, and he is coming." [Revelation 4: 6-8]
(ii) 6 Then I saw a Lamb standing in the center of the throne and in the middle of the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb looked as if he had been killed. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God that were sent into all the world.7 The Lamb came and took the scroll from the right hand of the One sitting on the throne. [Revelation 5: 6-7]
English Standard Version:
(i) 6and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,
"Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
who was and is and is to come!" [Revelation 4: 6-8].
(ii) 9 These living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the One who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever
6And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. [Revelation 5:6].
New Century Version:
(i) 6 Also before the throne there was something that looked like a sea of glass, clear like crystal.
In the center and around the throne were four living creatures with eyes all over them, in front and in back.7 The first living creature was like a lion. The second was like a calf. The third had a face like a man. The fourth was like a flying eagle.8 Each of these four living creatures had six wings and was covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day and night they never stop saying:
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
He was, he is, and he is coming." [Revelation 4: 6-8].
(ii) 6 Then I saw a Lamb standing in the center of the throne and in the middle of the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb looked as if he had been killed. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God that were sent into all the world.7 The Lamb came and took the scroll from the right hand of the One sitting on the throne.[Revelation 5:6].
Holman Christian Standard Bible:
(ii) 6 Also before the throne was something like a sea of glass, similar to crystal. In the middle [e] and around the throne were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion; the second living creature was like a calf; the third living creature had a face like a man; and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings; they were covered with eyes around and inside. Day and night they never stop, [f] saying:
Holy, holy, holy, [g]
Lord God, the Almighty,
who was, who is, and who is coming. [Revelation 4:6-8]
e.Revelation:4;6: Lit In the middle of the throne
f.Revelation: 4:8 Or they never rest
g.Revelation 4:8 Other mss read holy 9 times
(ii) 6 Then I saw one like a slaughtered lamb standing between [c] the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent into all the earth. 7 He came and took [the scroll] [d] out of the right hand of the One seated on the throne. [Revelation 5:6].
c. Revelation 5:6 Or standing in the middle of
d. Revelation 5:7 Other mss include the scroll.
St.John's spirit goes to the Heaven where he sees creatures with terrible descriptions. Here, the description of the Heaven, looks like as if it is from the Hell, with such queer creatures dotting the surroundings. The slaughtered lamb taking the scroll.....Wow!! One cannot but get stumpted by the imagination of the Biblical Writers.
Q. Does the God of the Bible asks Saul to kill all of the Amalekites: men, women, infants, sucklings, ox, sheep, camels, and donkeys? Why?
Ans: Yes. Because, when the Israelites came out of Egypt, the Amalekites tried to stop them from going to Canaan. So the God of the Bible wants to punish them in one of the most pathetic ways.
To understand this let us consider the following verses from the Bible:
21st Century King James Version:
Samuel also said unto Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over His people, over Israel.
Now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.
2Thus saith the LORD of hosts: `I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he lay in wait for him on the way when he came up from Egypt.
3Now go and smite Amalek and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. [1 Samuel 15:1-3]
New Century Version:
1 Samuel said to Saul, "The Lord sent me to appoint you king over Israel. Now listen to his message.2 This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: 'When the Israelites came out of Egypt, the Amalekites tried to stop them from going to Canaan. So I will punish them.3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and destroy everything they own as an offering to the Lord. Don't let anything live. Put to death men and women, children and small babies, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' " [1 Samuel 15:1-3]
Holman Christian Standard Bible:
1 Samuel told Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint you as king over His people Israel. Now, listen to the words of the LORD. 2 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: 'I witnessed [a] what the Amalekites did to the Israelites when they opposed them along the way as they were coming out of Egypt. 3 Now go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Do not spare them. Kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and donkeys. ' [1 Samuel 15:1-3]
a. 1 Samuel 15:2 LXX reads I will avenge
New Living Translation (NLT Bible):
1 One day Samuel said to Saul, “It was the Lord who told me to anoint you as king of his people, Israel. Now listen to this message from the Lord! 2 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I have decided to settle accounts with the nation of Amalek for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt. 3 Now go and completely destroy[a] the entire Amalekite nation—men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys.”[1 Samuel 15:1-3]
a.1 Samuel 15:3 The Hebrew term used here refers to the complete consecration of things or people to the Lord, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering; also in 15:8, 9, 15, 18, 20, 21.
God does not even spare the little babies....Huh!! What to comment on the contents of a book, which devout christians consider, "Holy"!!

Was Lord Krishna a Historical Character?
By Rakesh Krishnan Simha
"The sea, which had been beating against the shores, suddenly broke the boundary that was imposed on it by nature. The sea rushed into the city. It coursed through the streets of the beautiful city. The sea covered up everything in the city. Arjuna saw the beautiful buildings becoming submerged one by one. He took a last look at the mansion of Krishna. In a matter of a few moments it was all over. The sea had now become as placid as a lake. There was no trace of the beautiful city, which had been the favourite haunt of all the Pandavas. Dwarka was just a name; just a memory." – Mausala Parva, Mahabharata.![]() |
| Dwaraka Dham |
Using archaeological, scriptural, literary and astronomical data, scholars and scientists are coming round to the view that Krishna was definitely a historical character.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE:
![]() |
| Discovery of Submerged city of Dwarka, Gujarat |
In his book The Lost City of Dwarka, published in 1999, he writes about his undersea finds: “The discovery is an important landmark in the history of India. It has set to rest the doubts expressed by historians about the historicity of Mahabharata and the very existence of Dwarka city.”
Conducting 12 expeditions during 1983-1990, Rao identified two underwater settlements, one near the present-day Dwarka and the other in the nearby island of Bet Dwarka. This tallies with the two Dwarkas mentioned in the epic. The underwater expeditions won Rao the first World Ship Trust Award for Individual Achievement.
Another important find by our divers was a seal that establishes the submerged township's connection with the Dwarka of the Mahabharata. The seal corroborates the reference made in the ancient text, the Harivamsa, that every citizen of Dwarka should carry such a seal for identification purposes. Krishna had ruled that none without the seal should enter it. A similar seal has been found onshore as well.
LITERARY EVIDENCE:
The west coast of Gujarat was the traditional land of the Yadavs, or Yadus. According to the Bhagavad Puran, Krishna led the Yadavs thousands of kilometres west to establish Dwarka, so they could start a new life, safe from their many enemies in the Gangetic Valley. The Mahabharata says, Dwarka was reclaimed from the sea. Rao’s divers discovered that the submerged city's walls were erected on a foundation of boulders, suggesting that land indeed was reclaimed from the sea.
One cannot separate Dwarka from Krishna. If the city existed, then it is true that Krishna ruled over it.
ASTRONOMICAL EVIDENCE:
Dr Narhari Achar, professor of physics at the University of Memphis, Tennessee, has dated the Mahabharata war using astronomy and regular planetarium software. According to his research conducted in 2004-05, the titanic clash between the Pandavas and the Kauravas took place in 3067 BC. Using the same software, Dr Achar places the year of Krishna’s birth at 3112 BC.Dr Manish Pandit, a nuclear medicine physician in the UK, after examining the astronomical, archaeological and linguistic evidence, agrees with Dr Achar’s conclusions. Dr Pandit, who is also a distinguished astrologer and has written several books on the subject, traced the route of Krishna’s journeys to shoot the documentary, “Krishna: History or Myth?”
Dr Pandit says there are more than 140 astronomy references in the Mahabharata. Simulations of the night sky have been combined with geographical descriptions to arrive at various dates. He says the chances of these references repeating are next to nothing.
According to historian S.M. Ali, the author of Geography of Puranas, “The geographical matter contained in the Mahabharata is immense. It is perhaps the only great work which deals with geographic details and not incidentally, as other works.”
WHOSE HISTORY?
Of course, none of the evidence is good enough for the ossified historians that lord over India’s academia, regurgitating the lies written by British colonial scholars, who were in reality Christian missionaries.
For the missionaries, destroying the historicity of Krishna was important if they had any chance of establishing their religion in India. Also, many European scholars were shocked to learn that Indian history pre-dated their world by thousands of years. By labelling as myth the Indian historical sources like the Vedas, Mahabharata, Upanishads, and especially the Puranas, which give exact chronologies of Indian kings including Krishna, the missionaries ensured that Indian history did not clash with their world view.
That tradition continues. Disregarding all new research, academics like Romilla Thapar, R.S. Sharma and Irfan Habib have consigned Krishna to mythology.
In his textbook for Class X, Sharma writes, “Although Lord Krishna plays an important role in the Mahabharata, the earliest inscriptions and sculpture pieces found in Mathura between 200 BC and 300 AD do not attest his presence.” What brilliant deduction. Going by Sharma’s logic, any fool can dig at a random site, and upon failing to discover an artefact, declare Krishna never existed. Sadly, millions of Indian school children are being taught such lies.
Thapar, in fact, says the Mahabharata is a glorified account of a skirmish between two “Aryan” tribes, with Krishna merely playing the role of an agent provocateur.
And what do they do when confronted with the new evidence? They withdraw into their parallel dystopian world and argue it is not clinching evidence. But, of course, they will accept as truth the myths of other religions.
Dr Rao says further digging and diving, in tandem with India’s vast treasure trove of historical facts will further corroborate key dates of our eventful and glorious past.
As the Upanishads say, pratnakirtim apavirnu – know thy past.

The science of 108 in Hinduism
By Ravi
Just as the number 3 (three) is sacred in most of the world’s religions, the number 108 is considered holy in Hinduism and in other eastern traditions. 108 appears numerous times in the scriptures and some Hindus regularly chant the name of God on 108 beads.
There is also a science behind this special number. Hindu texts point out that:
1. the Sun is 108 times bigger than the Earth
2. the distance from the Earth to the Sun is equal to 108 suns side by side
3. the distance from the Earth to the moon is 108 moons side by side.
So does modern science back up these claims written in the sastras thousands of years ago? I decided to try out the math.
From NASA’s site: “The sun is way bigger than the Earth. Its radius is 109 times bigger than the radius of the Earth.” (the # is actually 108.xxx…NASA rounds up the decimal to 109).
The distance from the Sun to the Earth fluctuates between 92-94 million miles. The Vedas say the distance from the Earth to the Sun is equal to 108 suns placed side by side. The sun’s diameter is 865,000 mi.
865,000 miles x 108 = 93,420,000 miles.
The Earth’s distance to the moon is 108 moons side by side. NASA puts the moon’s diameter at 2159 miles. Science says that the moon’s distance fluctuates from 225,622-252,088 miles.
2159 miles x 108 = 237,276 miles.
Science and religion clearly don’t necessarily have to conflict with each other. The wisdom in ancient traditions such as Hinduism illustrate an order in the universe.

Hindu Calendars:
The Hindu Calendar is of two types:
## the solar calendar or the saura maana, and
## the lunisolar calendar or the chaandra maana.
We will describe both in detail in this article:
The Basic Structure:
The structure of the Hindu Calendar is of course composed of days making months making years. The system of describing days is the same in both the solar and lunisolar calendars. The system of describing months and hence years is what distinguishes the solar and lunisolar calendars from each other. We shall first describe the day, then the months and year of the solar calendar, and then the months and year of the lunisolar calendar. Then we shall speak about year numbering and the 60 names of the years.
The Day:
The Hindu calendrical day starts with local sunrise. It is allotted five "properties", called anga-s. They are:
## the tithi active at sunrise
## the weekday
## the nakshatra in which the moon resides at sunrise
## the yoga active at sunrise
## the karana active at sunrise.
Together these are called the panchaanga-s where pancha means "five" in Sanskrit. An explanation of the terms follows.
Tithi:
The angular distance (measured anticlockwise) between the sun and moon as measured from the earth can vary between 0° and 360°. This is divided into 30 parts. Each part ends at 12°, 24° etc. The circle ends at 360°. The time spent by the moon in each of this parts (i.e. the time taken for the angular distance to change by 12°) is called one tithi.
The month has two paksha-s or fortnights. The first 15 tithi-s constitute the bright fortnight or shukla paksha and the next 15tithi-s constitute the dark fortnight or krishna paksha. Tithi-s are indicated by their paksha and ordinal number within thepaksha. The 15th tithi of the bright fortnight (full moon) is called puurnimaa and the 15th tithi of the dark fortnight (new moon) is called amaavaasyaa.
The tithi in which the moon is at the time of sunrise of a day is taken to be the tithi for the day.
Weekday:
The weekdays are as usual seven. They are (starting from Sunday):
(i) Ravi vaasara
(ii) Soma vaasara
(iii) Mangala vaasara
(iv) Budha vaasara
(vi) Guru vaasara
(vii) Shukra vaasara
(viii) Shani vaasara
There are many other variations of these names, using other names of the celestial bodies of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The word vaasara means "weekday".
Nakshatra:
The ecliptic (circle on the sky in which the sun, moon and planets seem to move) is divided into 27 nakshatra-s, which are variously called lunar houses or asterisms. The starting point for this division is the point on the ecliptic directly opposite to the star Spica called Chitraa in Sanskrit. (Other slightly-different definitions exist.) It is called Meshaadi or the "start of Aries". The ecliptic is divided into the nakshatra-s eastwards starting from this point.
The names of the nakshatra-s are given below. As always, there are many versions with minor differences. The names in parentheses give roughly the correspondence of the nakshatra-s to modern names of stars. Note that nakshatra-s are (in this context) not just single stars but are segments on the ecliptic characterised by one or more stars. Hence you will find many stars mentioned for one nakshatra.
Nakshatra to star correspondence | |
|---|---|
Nakshatra | Star(s) |
Ashvinii | β and γ Arietis |
Bharanii | 35, 39, and 41 Arietis |
Krittikaa | Pleiades |
Rohinii | Aldebaran |
Mrighashiirsha | λ, φ Orionis |
Aardraa | Betelgeuse |
Punarvasu | Castor and Pollux |
Pushya | γ, δ and θ Cancri |
Aashleshaa | δ, ε, η, ρ, and σ Hydrae |
Maghaa | Regulus |
Puurva Phalgunii | δ and θ Leonis |
Uttara Phalgunii | Denebola |
Hasta | α to ε Corvi |
Chitraa | Spica |
Svaatii | Arcturus |
Vishaakhaa | α, β, γ and ι Librae |
Anuuraadha | β, δ and π Scorpionis |
Jyeshtha | α, σ, and τ Scorpionis |
Muula | ε, ζ, η, θ, ι, κ, λ, μ and ν Scorpionis |
Puurva Ashaadhaa | δ and ε Sagittarii |
Uttara Ashaadhaa | ζ and σ Sagittarii |
Shravana | α, β and γ Aquilae |
Shravishthaa | α to δ Delphinis |
Shatabhishaj | γ Aquarii |
Puurva Bhaadrapada | α and β Pegasi |
Uttara Bhaadrapada | γ Pegasi and α Andromedae |
Revatii | ζ Piscium |
The nakshatra in which the moon lies at the time of sunrise of a day is the nakshatra for the day.
Yoga:
First, the angular distance along the ecliptic of any object on the sky, measured from Meshaadi (as defined above) is called the longitude of that object. Now when the longitude of the sun and the longitude of the moon are added, they produce a value ranging from 0° to 360°. (Values greater than or equal to 360° must be reduced to less than 360° by subtracting 360°.) Now this is divided into 27 parts. Each part will now equal 800' (where ' is the symbol of the arcminute which means 1/60 of a degree.) Now these parts are called the yoga-s. They are labeled:
- Vishkambha
- Priiti
- Aayushmaan
- Saubhaagya
- Shobhana
- Atiganda
- Sukarman
- Dhriti
- Shuula
- Ganda
- Vriddhi
- Dhruva
- Vyaaghaata
- Harshana
- Vajra
- Siddhi
- Vyatiipaata
- Variiyas
- Parigha
- Shiva
- Siddha
- Saadhya
- Shubha
- Shukla
- Braahma
- Aindra
- Vaidhriti
Again, minor variations many exist. The yoga that is active during sunrise of a day is the yoga for the day.
Karana:
A karana is half of a tithi. Since the tithi-s are 30 in number, one would expect there to be 60 karana-s. But there are only eleven. There are four "fixed" karana-s and seven "repeating" karana-s. The four "fixed" karana-s are:
- Kimstughna
- Shakuni
- Naaga
- Chatushpaad
The seven "repeating" karana-s are:
- Bava
- Baalava
- Kaulava
- Taitila
- Gara
- Vanija
- Vishti
## Now the first half of the first tithi (of the bright fortnight) is always Kimstughna karana. Hence this karana is "fixed".
## Next, the seven repeating karana-s repeat eight times to cover the next 56 half-tithi-s. Thus these are the "repeating"karana-s.
## The three remaining half-tithi-s take the remaining "fixed" karana-s in order. Thus these are also "fixed".
The karana active during sunrise of a day is the karana for the day.
The Month and Year of the Solar Calendar:
Now that the days are defined, we shall speak of how the solar calendar reckons its months and year.
As has been previously noted, the sun is observed to travel along the ecliptic. The ecliptic is now divided into twelve parts called raashi-s, starting from the point of Meshaadi defined above and moving eastwards. They are:
- Mesha
- Vrishabha
- Mithuna
- Kataka
- Simha
- Kanyaa
- Tulaa
- Vrishchika
- Dhanus
- Makara
- Kumbha
- Miina
These are the Sanskrit equivalents of the zodiac – Aries etc.
The day on which the sun transits into each raashi before sunset is taken to be the first day of the month. In case the sun transits into a raashi after a sunset but before the next sunrise, then the next day is the first day of the month. (Minor variations on this definition exist.)
The days are then labeled 1, 2, 3…. till the first day of the next month.
Thus we get twelve months with varying lengths of 29 to 32 days. This variation in length is because the path of the earth around the sun is an ellipse. The months are named by the raashi in which the sun travels in that month.
The new year day is the first day of the month of Mesha. Currently, it occurs around April 15th on the Gregorian calendar.
This is the structure of the Hindu Solar Calendar.
The Months of the Lunisolar Calendar
When a new moon occurs before sunrise on a day, that day is said to be the first day of the lunar month. The days are not labeled separately from 1 as in the solar calendar, but the tithi is their only label. When two successive days have the sametithi, the latter is called an adhika tithi where adhika means "extra". Sometimes, one tithi may never touch a sunrise, and hence no day will be labeled by that tithi. It is then said to be a tithi kshaya where kshaya means "loss".
The lunar month names are:
- Chaitra
- Vaishaakha
- Jyaishtha
- Aashaadha
- Shraavana
- Bhaadrapada
- Aashvayuja
- Kaartika
- Maargashiirsha
- Pausha
- Maagha
- Phaalguna
Naming Lunar Months:
The naming of the lunar months is somewhat complex. It is based on the raashi into which the sun transits within a lunar month, i.e. before the new moon ending the month.
Extra Months:
There are twelve raashi names, there are twelve lunar month names. When the sun transits into Mesha raashi in a lunar month, then the name of the lunar month is Chaitra. When the sun transits into Vrishabha, then the lunar month isVaishaakha. So on.
When the sun does not at all transit into any raashi but simply keeps moving within a raashi in a lunar month (i.e. before a new moon), then that lunar month will be named according to the first upcoming transit. It will also take the epithet of adhikaor "extra". For example, if a lunar month elapsed without a solar transit and the next transit is into Mesha, then this month without transit is labeled adhika Chaitra. The next month will be labeled according to its transit as usual and will get the epithet shuddha or "clean". [Note that an adhika month is the first of two whereas an adhika tithi is the second of two.]
An adhika maasa (month) occurs once every two or three years.
Lost Months:
Now if the sun transits into two raashi-s within a lunar month, then the lunar month will be labeled by the first transit and will take the epithet kshaya or "loss". Actually, the month "lost" is the month which would have been labeled by the second transit. For example, if the sun transits into Mesha and Vrishabha in a lunar month, then it will be called Chaitra kshaya. There will be no month labeled Vaishaakha. Sometimes a kshaya is named by both months, so: Chaitra-Vaishaakha Kshayain which case the implication would be that the two months have merged (for religious purposes, see below).
A kshaya maasa occurs very rarely. Known gaps between occurrence of kshaya maasa-s are 19 and 141 years. The last was in 1983 CE. Jan-15 through Feb-12 were Pausha(-Maagha) kshaya. Feb-13 onwards was (adhika) Phaalguna and notMaagha. Maagha was "lost" that year.
Special Case: If there is no solar transit in a lunar month but there are two transits in the next lunar month,
- the first month will be labeled by the first transit of the second month (as usual) and take the epithet adhika and
- the next month will be labeled by its first transit (as usual) and take the epithet kshaya.
By one calculation, the last such occurrence was in 1963 CE. Oct-18 to Nov-16 midday were adhika Kaartika. From then on to Dec-15 were Kaartika(-Maargashiirsha) kshaya. Dec-16 onwards was Pausha, not Maargashiirsha.
Handling of religious observances in case of extra and lost months:
Among normal months, adhika months, and kshaya months, the earlier are considered "better" for religious purposes. That means, if a festival should fall on the 10th tithi of the Aashvayuja month (this is called Vijayadashamii) and there are twoAashvayuja months, the first adhika month will not see the festival, and the festival will be observed only in the second nijamonth. However, if the second month is Aashvayuja kshaya then the festival will be observed in the first adhika month itself.
A festival which is to be observed on a month that was lost will be observed on the corresponding "previous" i.e. kshayamonth. For example, the festival of Mahaashivaraatri which is to be observed on the fourteenth tithi of the dark fortnight ofMaagha was, in 1983 CE, observed on the corresponding tithi of Pausha kshaya, since in that year, Maagha was lost, as we mentioned above.
The Year of the Lunisolar Calendar:
The new year day is the first day of the month of Chaitra. In case of adhika Chaitra or Chaitra kshaya the rules outlined above will apply.
Correspondence of the Lunisolar Calendar to the Solar Calendar:
A lunisolar calendar is always a calendar based on the moon's celestial motion, which in a way keeps itself close to a solar calendar based on the sun's (apparent) celestial motion. That is, the lunisolar calendar's new year is to kept always close (within certain limits) to a solar calendar's new year.
Since the Hindu lunar month names are based on solar transits, and the month of Chaitra will, as defined above, always be close to the solar month of Mesha, the Hindu lunisolar calendar will always keep in track with the Hindu solar calendar.
Year numbering and names:
The epoch (starting point or first day of the first year) of the current era of Hindu calendar (both solar and lunisolar) is BCE3102 January 23 on the proleptic Gregorian calendar (i.e. the Gregorian calendar extended back in time before its promulgation from 1582 October 15). Both the solar and lunisolar calendars started on this date. After that, each year is labeled by the number of years elapsed since the epoch.
This is a unique feature of the Hindu calendar. All other systems use the current ordinal number of the year as the year label. But just as a person's true age is measured by the number of years that have elapsed starting from the date of the person's birth, the Hindu calendar measures the number of years elapsed. Today (as of writing this on 2005-05-18) the elapsed years in the Hindu calendar are 5106 and this is the 5107th Hindu calendar year. Note that the lunisolar calendar year will usually start earlier than the solar calendar year.
Apart from this numbering system, there is also a cycle of 60 calendar year names, which started at the first year (at elapsed years zero) and runs continuously:

Eras:
Hindu mythology speaks of four eras or ages, of which we are currently in the last. The four are:
- Krita Yuga
- Tretaa Yuga
- Dvaapara Yuga
- Kali Yuga
They are often translated into English as the golden, silver, bronze and iron ages. (Yuga means era.) It is believed that the ages see a gradual decline of dharma, wisdom, knowledge, intellectual capability, life span and emotional and physical strength. The epoch provided above is the start of the Kali Yuga. The Kali Yuga is 432,000 years long. The Dvaapara, Tretaaand Krita Yuga-s are said to be twice, thrice and four time the length of the Kali Yuga respectively. Thus they together constitute 4,320,000 years. This is called a Caturyuga.
A thousand and a thousand (i.e. two thousand) caturyuga-s are said to be one day and night of the creator Brahmaa. He (the creator) lives for 100 years of 360 such days and at the end, he is said to dissolve, along with his entire Creation, into the Eternal Soul or Paramaatman or Brahma (different from Brahmaa).
