A Dhaka court on Thursday allowed police to interrogate detained blogger Asif Mohiuddin for three days amid a government crackdown on bloggers.
Detective Branch Inspector Mainul Islam had sought 10 days of remand to question him.

Metropolitan Magistrate Anwar Sadat, meanwhile, denied bail to the blogger despite an appeal by his lawyer Alauddin Molla.

On Tuesday, three other bloggers were sent to police custody for questioning for seven days each. Subrata Adhikari Shuvo, Mashiur Rahman Biplob and Russell Parvez were arrested on Monday night.

Asif was called into detective police office on Wednesday morning.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam later said Asif was arrested.

Asif and other detained bloggers face police charges of ‘instigating negative elements against Islam to create anarchy’

Blogging and bloggers in Bangladesh became an issue of discussion after a group of online activists took to the streets of Shahbagh on Feb 5, hours after International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla to life in prison.

Various groups immediately joined them and later the Shahbagh turned into a place of common people seeking capital punishment for war crimes involving crimes against humanity. The platform quickly became the famed ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’.

In a quick development, a Chittagong-based radical group Hifazat-e-Islam started attacking the bloggers involved with Ganajagaran Mancha as‘atheists’. They demanded authorities shut Ganajagaran Mancha and punish 10 bloggers. Asif was on the list.

On Oct 1, 2011, police detained Asif for 18 hours for his blog. Later he was released upon suggestions that he would not write blogs.

On Jan 14, Asif was brutally attacked apparently for his blog. He was under treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for several days.

Asif passed Secondary School Certificate examinations from Dhaka College in 2000. Later he graduated in engineering from American International University Bangladesh.

He worked at an IT firm until he was attacked by unidentified people.

Police on Apr 1 detained four youths over the murder attempt involving Asif. They reportedly confessed to have attacked Asif on suggestions of a religious ‘bigot’.

After demands were raised by Hifazat-e-Islam, the government had formed a committee to monitor blogs.

Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir and Law Minister Shafique Ahmed had earlier said actions would be taken in case of hurting religious sentiments.
