Hindu priest's family attacked
London: Northern Ireland police have beefed up security at the Indian Community Centre in North Belfast after family of a Hindu priest came under racial attack from a gang of youths. Though the family said they are frightened after the June 15 attack on them, they have decided to stay back at the centre following assurances from the police.
The priest, who lives with his wife and two children in the Centre, said at one stage they were planning to leave the area. The priest's wife was alone in the house when the attack took place on June 15 night. A gang of youth reportedly tried to break down the front door and threw stones.
Bidit Dey, office manager at the Centre said, "police did not actually stop by or call in to see her after the attack." He, however, declined to give name of the priest or his family. A police spokeswoman today said a police unit patrolled the area in response to the reports of the attack but did not enter the building itself.

Crazy loving you
[Did Sharukh Khan take a U-turn, due to intense Religious Pressure from Islamic Fanatics, at the end. He said he loved the controversial book, Da Vinci Code, where Christianity is shown in poor light.......He did not apologize for that, but had to back-track when his own religious/cult beliefs are concerned....
In a written reply to the magazine he said, " He was misrepresented. He added that his most important objective in life is to stand up for the tenets of Islam."
So the question arises do Sharukh Khan support some of the most controversial tenants of Islam, like Jihad, imposition of Jijiya Tax on Non-Muslims, Killing of those who worship idols, belittling other religions, by saying there is no God Greater than Allah (Without defining who is the Allah), cutting of limbs and all sorts of barbaric acts prevalent in Islamic countries, putting women behind the veil, asking husbands to beat their wives or give ten blows to their wives, stoning women to death, Halal (one of the most cruel ways of killing animals for food), etc??
If those Islamic Fanatics do not to give land for his Burial in Maharashtra, then he can become a Hindu and get Cremated!! Even some sects of Hindus do not Cremate their deads (like the Nath commuity of Bengal who give burial to the deads, even though they are Hindus). After marrige with a Hindu women he is already half Hindu, according to Hindu Beliefs....So he can choose between Quiet Burial or to get cremated....
The moot point is that Sharukh Khan lacks the guts and good intentions to reform societies. I would have appreciated if his reply would have been a little different not the usual stereotyped ones like by Islamic Fanatics. Also the question arises why these Muslim Fanatic groups did not take similar action again the painter, M F Hussein who denigrated Hindu Gods.....]
The following is the controversial interview which appeared in the Mumbai based Time and Style Magazine:
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH SHAH RUKH KHAN AND ASK HIM THE ZANIEST QUESTIONS? WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE FATHER, SUPERSTAR, ACTOR AND DREAM GUY ALL ROLLED INTO ONE? THE BRAND AMBASSADOR OF TAG HEUER FIELDS SOME PRETTY UNNERVING QUESTIONS .
“I was destined to higher studies or elite team sports but I chose to major in filmmaking. People say I now rule Bollywood, but the way I see it, I simply work hard on making endless opportunities to challenge and reinvent myself. A cross-over to Hollywood is not an option: I’d rather make a mark without losing my identity and my culture. My name is Shah Rukh Khan and I share TAG Heuer’s values.” – Shah Rukh Khan on things in common with TAG Heuer.
If your home was burning down, what would you save with your two hands?
My children — son Aryan and daughter Suhana. You are no fan of…Restaurants and eating out.
How much power have women got?
As much as they would like to wield… It’s just that they need to believe in themselves.Women are more powerful than men, I’m a true believer of that. But sometimes they don’t wield it because they feel it would be wrong. I think they should go out and wield the power.
From your Fairy Godmother you would ask for …
I would ask her to meet my daughter. She loves fairies.
According to you who is the most impressive figure in history?
There are lots of them, some negative ones like Hitler, then Napoleon,Winston Churchill and if I can call it history, then Prophet Mohammed and from recent time — Nelson Mandela. And there are the nice ones like Gandhiji and Mother Teresa.
What virtue should every man have?
The right thing to do, I think, is not use a modus operandi to make someone fall in love with you. Just be honest and go with it.
For one day I would like to be (Heidi Klum, George Bush, an Eskimo…)No one else. The world wants to be me, so why should I want to be someone else?
What is your most favourite song ever?‘Suzanna I’m crazy loving you’.
Which book made a deep impression on you and why?
I liked the plot and story of Shantaram. The Da Vinci Code is nice as well and so is Bourne Identity. I like fiction; of course Shantaram is not fiction, otherwise Nine Paths of Desire by an Iranian writer is another book that moved me.
Is there anything that angers you in this world?
Not any more, I don’t get angry about anything except when people let me down...like if somebody says I cannot do this. I like people who say I can’t and I don’t and I won’t... but I don’t like people who say they can, they will and then they don’t.
What are you made of? (Which incidentally happens to be the tagline of the brandTAG Heuer!)
Lot of humour, lot of hard work, lot of perseverance and lot of fun. And I like to believe in lot of honesty.
You are since 2003, a member of the ‘TAG Heuer dream team of brand ambassadors’ with Tiger Woods, Maria Sharapova, Kimi Raikonnen, Lewis Hamilton and now Leonardo Di Caprio, just to mention a few… it must be something special: how do you feel in this role?
It’s very exciting. This brand chooses people around the world who’re not only achievers but perfectionists. Ihave seen Leonardo Di Caprio from Titanic, and also other movies before that — apart from being a handsome young man, he is also very intelligent. I saw and heard him speak at the Golden Globe awards. He knows what to say and speaks very intelligently.
Which watch do you generally wear? Do you connect with it as just an accessory or on a personal level?
Fortunately, I have enough TAG Heuer watches to match every mood and occasion. I wear the Carrera Tachymetre when I am relaxing or hanging out. I wear the Grand Carrera for slightly formal occasions. I like to wear my Monaco 69 SRK Limited Edition as well.
Which values of the brand do you share the most?
Sportiness and toughness.

"I want to put this bluntly that I still abide by the ideology of Hindutva which I have followed ever since I commenced my political career. And I will remain wedded to it for all times to come," Mr.Rajnath Singh
Nagpur/Ghaziabad: Reeling under factional feud following Lok Sabha poll debacle, the BJP came under attack from its spiritual mentor RSS which accused it of being ‘inconsistent’ on Hindutva even as party chief Rajnath Singh said he was wedded to the core ideology.
Senior RSS ideologue M G Vaidya said "the BJP has failed to convey the real meaning of 'Hindutva' to the people (in the recent elections). Probably, they thought they were not deemed to climb the pedestal of power with 'Hindutva' line. Hence, BJP should now disassociate itself with 'Hindutva'."
But "if the BJP gives up 'Hindutva', it will automatically snap its umbilical cord with the Sangh," Vaidya wrote in his weekly column in local Marathi daily 'Tarun Bharat'.
Vaidya said BJP leaders had no patience and almost forgot 'Hindutva' and its basic principles.
Vaidya's remarks assume significance in the backdrop of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh's recent remarks to TV channels that the party lacked clarity on Hindutva and BJP has to be a current party and not a party of yesterday.
Narrating the history of the Jana Sangh which later became BJP, Vaidya, said BJP had adopted Gandhian socialism, but could not stop itself from being labeled as a communal party. After 1984 general elections drubbing, BJP again started chanting 'Hindutva'. BJP came close to power, but could not sustain its strength.
The party came to power again (in 1999), but after losing in 2004, it again turned towards 'Hindutva', Vaidya pointed out.
He said BJP mentioned 'Hindutva' in its election manifesto in recent Lok Sabha elections but it "miserably failed to attract" the common voters and citizens in the country".
Responding to RSS' attack, Rajnath Singh said he will remain wedded to the core ideology for all times to come.
"I want to put this bluntly that I still abide by the ideology of Hindutva which I have followed ever since I commenced my political career. And I will remain wedded to it for all times to come," Singh told reporters in Ghaziabad.

BJP Leadership in Disarray: Sudheendra Kulkarni
[My addition: Does BJP want to mourn its win??!! It seems so along with the media, who likes to come out with stories everyday, weeping on the BJPs' remarkable performance in some states. Except the south India, where BJP does not have any presence, or in Rajasthan/Uttar Pradesh, BJP did well and should be elated by electoral performance.
However, BJP is again trying to fall in the media trap. It earlier fell on booby-trap laid by a private channel on Varun Gandhi episode. It did a terrible mistake by disassociating itself from the Varun Gandhi issue, in the hope of getting the votes of Muslims, which was wrong and too much wrong. This irritated many Hindus who voted against the Party.
Besides this the BJP did Not use the services of leaders like Mr.Praful Goradia or Mr.Narendra Modi to the full potential in places like Uttar Pradesh when they knew there is a consolidation of Muslim votes going on, in favour of anti-BJP forces.
Besides this while Rahul Gandhi toured India, BJP did nothing for the rescue of Varun Gandhi, who was in Jail, except sending out platitudes and giving speeches on Television---as if Varun Gandhi was not at all an Issue. BJP even could not ulitlise the hate speech of one of the Congress leaders in Andhra Pradesh to their benefits--when you are in a war, stop thinking of ethics too much.
I do not understand why BJP gives so much ear to this anglicized media--let the dogs bark loudly, how it affects to elephant. BJP should learn from Shiv Sena as how to stop dissent in the Party and move ahead.
Also, BJP should remember that, except in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan they did well and should be patted on the back. Instead of weeping over the electoral outcome, they should rejoice........
I am appalled to see the BJP instead of celebrating their victory are busy mourning their wins--when can the BJP think of positivism. I DO NOT CONSIDER THIS AS DEFEAT AT ALL.....
Look at the condition of the Congress in Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, etc. Are all these flukes?? The problem is that some paper tigers like Mr.Kulkarni (Who is an outsider in BJP having Left leanings) or Dr.Swapan Das Gupta are trying to exploit the party to the hilt. ....
Moreover, just let me when did Muslims came out and spontaneously voted for the BJP in the last 20 years and also how many Muslim votes did Mr. A V Vajpayee get in the earlier elections?? If the majority of Muslims and Christians are not giving votes to BJP then what is the use of giving them plump positions or Party tickets or look for their votes for electoral win--this is useless. All those who are advocating this myth including Brajesh Mishra are simply fooling people....Muslim never ever voted for the BJP in mass scale and I do not think it is going to change too much in future. It is also not necessary to get the votes of all sections of society to win elections. Do MIM get the votes of Hindus?? If they get also, they are not dependent on Hindu votes for winning.
How do Shiv Sena win so many seats even it is a Pure Hindu Party?? BJP should introspect.....
If majority of Muslims have made up their mind that they would oppose BJP on Ram Janmabhoomi Issue, in every elections, then alright---why not accept the challenge and work for it.....Fortune favours the brave. Why always remain cowards and mourn the Wins.
Mr.Kulkarni is right when he says, "BJP needed to rethink its approach to Muslims, Hindutva, the poor, the RSS and itself."
But Mr.Kulkarni should note that if Mr.Mahesh Jethmalani, whose wife is a Muslim could lose from Bombay on BJP ticket, how can he say that majority of Muslims voted for BJP in Maharastra??!! Most of them voted the same rotten Congress-NCP alliance in Maharastra, which was responsible for Mumbai Carnage.
The BJP should be either a Party which would raise the problems of Nationalistic Indians or it should be a pure Hindu Party--there should not be any middle-path. Moreover, all the undisciplined workers should be sacked including Muktar Abbas Naqbi, Dr. Nazma Heptullah, etc. who were not able to garner the votes of their communities.
I think it will be better if the party leadership is handed over to Dr.Murli Monahar Joshi so that strict action can be taken against non-performers. Mr.Rajnath Singh did his best but what will he do if some of his own partymen sabotages at the end.
Also all those leaders from Rajasthan (Ms.Vasundhara Raje group) should be sacked immediately for Party's poor showing. Moreover, Mr.Varun Gandhi or Ms.Maneka Gandhi should be asked to lead Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, J & K and Delhi or in places wherever there is a large section of sikhs.
Top BJP leadership should remember/understand that Hindus vote them so that their problems are raised in Parliament and not to form meaningless coalitions or to form sham governments in states...]
The BJP was "enfeebled" by so much "disarray" at the top never before witnessed in its history and its prime ministerial candidate L K Advani himself "failed" to assert his leadership at "crucial points", says a key party strategist while analysing its poll debacle.
Sudheendra Kulkarni, who is also a close aide of Advani, while giving an insight into the factors behind BJP's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections cited confusion about Hindutva, failure to overcome the party's limited social base, negativism in its campaign and a leadership in disarray.
Writing in Tehelka magazine, Kulkarni said the BJP needed to rethink its approach to Muslims, Hindutva, the poor, the RSS and itself.
The BJP's failure to convince the people on the need for a change was rooted in a combination of structural, political, ideological, organisational and campaign-related reasons.
"On the top of all these, we had the Varun Gandhi episode in the middle of the election campaign , which , along with other factors, clearly led to the consolidation of Muslim votes in favour of the Congress in UP."
Kulkarni also said the cropping up of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's name in the middle of the campaign did not help at all.
"Never in the history of the Jana Sangh or the BJP was the party enfeebled by so much disarray at the top. The disorder at the centre and also in several states like Rajasthan, UP and Delhi demoralised the disunited party workers down the line with disastrous results," he said.
"It is also true that Advani himself failed to assert his leadership at crucial points before and during the campaign," he added.
"Look at the irony. Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul made an essentially weak Prime Minister like Dr. Manmohan Singh look strong by backing him solidly," Kulkarni said, adding, "In contrast, the BJP and the Sangh Parivar made a strong leader like Advani, whose contribution to the growth of the party is enormous, look weak, helpless and not fully in command."
Saddened by this, Kulkarni said many dedicated party workers bemoaned, "Atalji succeeded in becoming Prime Minister because he had Advaniji working for him faithfully and determinedly. Unfortunately this time, there was no Advaniji working similarly for Advaniji."
On BJP's future, he said the BJP can indeed bounce back.
"But it can do so only if it first renews and empowers itself comprehensively — in its ideology, its geographical-social spread, its own political strength, its mass activity, its alliance-building, its cadre-based organizational network, and its leadership."
Kulkarni said he also carried his share of responsibility for the party's defeat.
"As one who was closely associated with the party’s election campaign, specifically the campaign of L K Advani, our prime ministerial candidate, I too committed mistakes," he said.
To be meaningful, productive and curative, collective introspection in the party must begin with each one individually, Kulkarni said.
Collective responsibility is a laudable principle, but it can often become a mask for persons in key positions at the central and state levels to evade their individual responsibility, Kulkarni said, adding, "This has often happened in the BJP."
Mumbai police chief Hasan Gafoor's transfer Sena-BJP's victory: Opposition
Mumbai: The Opposition Shiv Sena-BJP alliance on Saturday termed the transfer of Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor as its "victory".
"We are happy that Gafoor has been shunted out," Leader of Opposition in Assembly Ramdas Kadam told reporters at Vidhan Bhawan here on Saturday, assserting that the alliance had been demanding Gafoor's removal over the handling of 26/11 terror attacks.
"We had told the government that despite central intelligence agencies warning about the terror strikes, police did not take appropriate action," the senior Sena leader said.
Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray said the police commissioner's transfer was long overdue. "We were seeking action against police from the beginning," he told reporters at Sena Bhawan in central Mumbai.

The business activities of the Company are:
1. Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC)
2. Infrastructure development on PPP model
3. Mining
4. . Real Estate.
Incorporated in 1977 as a partnership firm and converted into a private limited company in 1984, it was deemed a public company in 1991 and went public in September 2006. The shares of Atlanta are listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange.

is driven by a team of professionals and an eminent board of directors, all of whom possess strong domain experience and expertise.
It has experience in executing complex and high IRR projects and deploying sophisticated technology.
THE UP-COMING RAILWAY BUDGET COULD GIVE POSITIVE TRIGGERS TO THE SHARE PRICE OF THE COMPANY AS THE COMPANY IS INTO RAILWAY PROJECTS IN A MAJOR WAY.
Moreover, the fact that the government has laid out a blueprint to completely open up the mining sector, attract private participation and allow 100 per cent FDI for captive mining (for power, cement and steel companies) augurs well for the shareholders of the company.
FUTURE DIRECTION:
  • Leveraging Public Private Partnership.
  • Participating in more toll-based BOT projects.
  • Owning a mine.
  • Establishing Pan India realty presence especially across Tier II and Tier III cities.
  • Developing and managing parking plazas, ports.
  • Executing airport management projects
In 2003, it Completed extraction and transfer of Coal/Coal Measure Strata in deploying "surface miners" on hire basis at Belpahar OCP for Mahanadi Coal Fields Ltd.
In 2006 it received ISO 9001: 2000 Quality Management Standard certification.
Atlanta Ltd broadly operates in 3 (three) segments:
1. Infrastructure: From executing India's first greenfield BOT project on National Highways - Udaipur Bypass and successfully participating in toll-based PPP infrastructure development projects to building roads, highways, bridges, runways, docks, ports, canals, water courses, irrigation, embankment, reservoirs and executing several EPC projects, Atlanta is at the forefront of developing India's infrastructure.
The company has serviced some of the biggest players in the industry such as National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Airports Authority of India to name a few.
Atlanta has established an enviable reputation in the infrastructure development and EPC space due to its ability to harness technology to match the momentum of tomorrow. The company owns and employs modern, specialised and critical fleet of equipment to successfully execute large and complex projects.
Atlanta's EPC division is the oldest and the largest business division of the company and its key activities comprise the actual execution of the infrastructure projects. This key in-house EPC capability helps the company deliver quality projects on time, amply demonstrated by the successful completion of the Udaipur Bypass project in less than half of the allocated time.
Projects under execution The company is currently executing two toll-based BOT projects: Mumbra Bypass (which the company completed in December, 2008 and from which Toll Collection has already started) and Nagpur-Kondhali (Which is nearing completion) along with several other EPC projects.
Looking forward Atlanta being a forward thinking company, besides identifying traditional infrastructure development projects plans to foray into two new emerging segments: building and maintaining car parking plazas and airport management.
The company, is confident of success in both these segments due to its inherent construction expertise, flawless execution skills, technological know-how which will be backed by alliances with established foreign players in these field.
2.MINING: Atlanta is active in the high margin limestone and coal mining business with over a decades experience in contract mining, having gained valuable experience at a time when the captive mining business was not even on the radar of competitors.
Prominent features that make Atlanta the obvious contract mining partner of choice competent and best suited to take on the sector's specific needs and challenges include:
1. SURFACE MINING TECHNOLOGY: Atlanta is the first player in the country to have prudently invested in superior surface mining technology: a technology imported from Wirtgen, Germany and Volvo, Sweden that eliminates conventional operations like drilling, blasting and crushing. Surface mining technology enables controlled excavation, is not labour-intensive nor is it risky like the conventional mining process.
2. CAPACITY: Atlanta has the capacity to extract (limestone / coal) over 25000 tones per day, significantly higher than industry peers.
3. CREDIBLE PRESENCE: Atlanta’s distinguished clients include: Mahanadi Coal Fields Ltd. (a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd), Reliance Petroleum Ltd, The Associated Cement Companies Ltd, Narmada Cement Company Ltd, Tata Chemicals Ltd, amongst others.
3.REALTY: Having anticipated the market trends in the realty sector, Atlanta increased its preparedness to leverage the opportunities by prudently investing in land sites with clear land titles and concurrently demonstrated success and expertise across diverse formats by executing commercial projects and residential projects in prime and emerging locations in Mumbai.
With a longstanding sectoral presence in constructing and executing large projects, Atlanta is now on its way to build attractive properties in and around Mumbai and plans to develop innovative structures across all realty segments in emerging Tier II and Tier III cities across the country.
Besides this Atlanta Ltd has 25 acres of Land in Thane (near Mumbai), with a 10 lakh sq.fr build-able area, which has a value around Rs.270--Rs.300 Cr. The Company has recently been awarded a contract from Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation in respect of tender submitted by the Company for providing infrastructure for DSL (Dahej SEZ Ltd) at Dahej (Gujarat) amounting to Rs 1464.81 million of which Rs.50 Cr worth of project has been completed. This will show up in Q4FY09 results. According to the sources, the company is expected to get some NHAI projects soon. Atlanta Ltd will benefit immensely due to government's stress on infrastructure development. The company has a stability of earnings as it is into BOT project, though here the margin is very less.
The company is currently doing the Rs 226.24 Cr Nagpur-Kondhali four-lane toll-based BOT project. Balaji Tollways Ltd, an SPV was formed for this purpose. This project is expected to go on stream from FY 2010. The company has invested a major portion of the IPO proceeds in Balaji Tollways Ltd. (for the execution of the Nagpur-Kondhali project).
Construction of Mumbra bypass project was successfully completed and toll collections has commenced.
The Company is presently executing following major contracts:

* Extraction & Transfer of Coal/Coal Measure Strata by deploying 'Surface Miners' on hiring basis at Lingaraj OCP of Lingaraj Area.
* Deployment and operation of suitable capacity of Surface Miner(s) & allied equipments for cutting of Coal/Coal Measure Strata and its associated works at Baroud OC Project - Raigarh Area.
* Deployment and Operation of suitable capacity of Surface Miner(s) and allied equipments for cutting of coal/coal measure strata and its associated works at Chhal OC Project - Raigarh Area.
The company is currently involved in the following real estate projects in partnership:
* Construction of Commercial Building 'Atlanta Centre' situated at Goregaon (E), Mumbai.
* Construction of Commercial Building 'ABT SQUARE' at Malad (E), Mumbai.
* Construction of Shopping Mall 'ATLANTA V MALL'at Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
THE SHARE PRICE OF THE COMPANY COULD MORE THAN DOUBLE FROM THE CURRENT PRICE IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS TIME FRAME. ALL TIME HIGH FOR THE SCRIP IS AROUND Rs.1400 (Rupees Fourteen Hundred).
Chartically speaking, the stock of Atlanta Ltd, is about to give a break out from its existent trend. If it crosses Rs.97.5 with good volume, then the next targets could be Rs.150--Rs.192--Rs.240.
I think you are enjoying my other recommended counters like Northgate Technologies Ltd, Glory Polyfilms Ltd, Ranklin Solutions Ltd, Sanguine Media Services Ltd (10-bagger), Kohinoor Broadcasting Corporation Ltd, VLS Finance Ltd, Phoenix International Ltd, Galada Power and Telecom Ltd, SAAG RR Infra Ltd, Prajay Engineers Syndicate Ltd, etc.
Also take note that something might be cooking in one of my old favourites, H S India Ltd (Hotel Silver, BSE Code: 532145). If we compare it it with Advani Hotels Ltd we will find that its book value is almost same as Advani Hotels Ltd (BSE Code: 523269) but it is trading at almost 1/4 th the price of Advani Hotels Ltd, which looks a little absurd, especially when momentum is driving most of the counters.
The point to be noted here is that the book value of H S India Ltd actually improved to Rs.8.64 from around Rs.5, a couple of years back. The business model of H S India Ltd is much stable than Advani Hotels Ltd. All time high for the scrip of H S India Ltd is around Rs.80; hence the scrip is poised for immediate re-rating.
Possible Triggers for H S India Ltd:
1. In order to exhilarate hospitality standard and with an aim to provide high class facility to its valued Customers, the Company has completed the construction of additional rooms and Banquet Halls on property of the Company. Management is of view that it will meet the present demand of market. Hence the additional business model somewhat resembles Bhagwati Banquets & Hotels Ltd (my earlier recommended counter at Rs.27--28)
2. SUBSIDIARY COMPANY: As on 22nd April, 2008, the Company has acquired 1,03,675 equity shares of Kesar Motels Private Limited @ of Rs. 400/- each representing 76% stake in the Company. Consequent to such acquisition, Kesar Motels Private Limited has become subsidiary of the Company.
3. CLOSING DOWN OF SOFTWARE DIVISION: Board of Directors of the Company has decided to close down its Software Division. This will help the company to focus on its core competence and it it will not have much affect on turnover and profitability of the Company.
The company earlier informed that the Board of Directors of the Company at its meeting held on May 27, 2009, has allotted 3 lakhs equity shares of the Company to IFCI Ltd on conversion of 3000, 12.5% OFCDs of Rs 1000 (One Thousand) each.

Statesman-like debut by Jaitley as RS Opp leader
Making his debut as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, senior BJP leader used his years of experience as a senior advocate to outline the main Opposition’s role in the Upper House, promising to play a constructive role while keeping a close watch on the Government’s functioning.
Jaitley’s hour-long speech, heard with rapt attention by the MPs, placed a range of important issues broadly in three categories — to be supported, to be watched, and to be fiercely opposed.
Reaching out to the Treasury benches, Jaitley said his party “would not oppose the Government for the sake of opposition. At the same time, the BJP would caution and fiercely criticise the Government if it went astray”, he said.
Assuring the nation that the BJP would perform the role of a responsible Opposition, Jaitley admitted that the BJP was disappointed with the Lok Sabha results which, he said, demonstrated people wanted political stability in an era of coalition Governments.
He cautioned the UPA Government that it could no longer take cover behind its allies for non-performance after getting more than 200 seats. “If the last five years lacked adequate governance due to political roadblocks, no such alibi will be available to the Government in the next five years,” he said.
The BJP leader said the role of the Opposition would be guided by national interests, like how to strengthen the country and make India a developed economic power by 2020.
“Our principal objective even when we sit in Opposition is to strengthen India. We are committed to strengthening India by making its borders secure and by eliminating all forms of fear and terror, by expediting the process of economic growth and making India a developed nation by 2020, he said, adding, “We strengthen India by being committed to social justice. Our role is to endorse the Government when it is on track, but to caution it against pitfalls, to act as a watch-dog in order to check abuse of power and fiercely oppose it when needed.
Our sole guide in determining our role is the national interest."
Assuring the Government that the BJP would stand solidly behind it in realising the common goals, he said his party would support the proposed Food Security Act, zero-tolerance policy to terror, 'one-rank one pension' in the armed forces, and Women's Reservation Bill.
Referring to areas in which the BJP would like to caution the Government, Jaitley said the party always believed that Indo-US relation should not be judged on the mere touch stone of the nuclear deal. "There are three tests that this Government is now going to face where our interests conflict with those of the US -- to sign the NPT, the agricultural negotiations at the WTO and the fixation of the carbon emission norms in the climate change and global warming negotiations," he said.
Taking stock of security situation in India's neighbourhood, Jaitley said the growing influence of Taliban in Pakistan, Maoists in Nepal, LTTE in Sri Lanka and HuJI in Bangladesh had direct implications on the country and asked the Government to spell out its plans to "secure our borders" in this context.
He said the President's address had no mention of the racial attacks on Indians in Australia. "This is a little disappointing," Jaitley said, adding that the Opposition would stand by the Government in its endeavour "so that these inhuman and barbaric attacks are not repeated in future".
Referring to the proposed Bill to check communal violence, Jaitley reminded that India has a federal system of governance where law and order is a State subject.
He asked the US to withdraw its travel advisory declaring India an unsafe destination, and pointed out that when the Government forced the BCCI to shift the IPL cricket matches to South Africa, the BJP had cautioned that with this erroneous move will club India with Pakistan as an unsafe destination.
Coming to the ongoing trial of the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, the BJP leader said such a sensitive trial was conducted in a "shabby manner".
