Fairer sex are more unfair
A study by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Pune division reveals that women officials are not falling behind their male counterparts when it comes to demanding bribe.

ACB officials said that in many cases women officials have been found to have subjected people, who avoid to pay the bribe, to a barrage of abuses and even threats.

An ACB official said, “Many women staffers think that we would be lenient towards them because of their gender. Hence, they do not hesitate to demand money and accept bribe during their office hours. On the other hand, male officials prefer to hold such rendezvous outside their offices, especially during the late hours of night, in a bid to avoid getting trapped while accepting bribe.”

Speaking to dna, deputy commissioner of police Sarang Awad of Pune ACB said, “Most of the women employees prefer to accept bribe in their offices and avoid middlemen. They ask for bribe on the face or over the phone and expect the amount to be paid in their offices.”

Awad said that these corrupt women officials adopt various tactics of negotiation while demanding bribe and do not compromise on the decided amount.  “In the case of sub-inspector Dwarka Doke who was recently trapped accepting Rs5,000, she had demanded the bribe without any hesitation. She would call the complainant and demand money, unlike most male officials who would take precautions and use middlemen to avoid getting involved directly.”

According to the ACB record, most women officials trapped over the past two years are Class I employees from revenue, law and judiciary, police and health departments. The agency arrested five women officers, including three Class I employees, in 2011.
