Bangladesh: Jamaatis plan guerilla attack
~~Md Esaraf Hossain
Like in some trouble-torn countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, militant activists of the embattled Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir are reportedly preparing for launching more attacks in guerrilla-style action on law enforcers in the guise of cops.
As part of their new operational tactics, activists wearing uniforms of different law- enforcement agencies like police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Detective Branch (DB) of police, Special Branch (SB) of police and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) are planning to carry out attacks on the law enforcers, intelligence sources said.
Some intelligence outfits have already alerted the government against such camouflaged attacks on the law enforcers.
Besides, its leaders and activists are also trying to collect various sophisticated firearms and ammunition from its local and international sources to carry out subversives act in the capital and other parts of the country to destabilise the ongoing war crimes trial against some BNP-Jamaat leaders.
After some attacks on law enforcers carried out by Jamaat-Shibir men, it was found that such militant activists of Jamaat-Shibir and their supporter Hizbut Tahir are carrying out sudden attacks on law enforcers wearing modern jeans-paint and T-shirt avoiding their traditional dress like Paijama-panjabi and tupi.
Besides in some occasions, they were seen attacking law enforcers chanting some pro-ruling party slogans like “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” and “Rajakarer Fashi Chai”.
With a view to misleading the law enforcers for some time, they are attacking law enforcers through using various secret signals like “hit and run”.
The Jamaat-Shibir men took to the street and started indiscriminate attacks on law enforcers since November 5 demanding release of their front-ranking leaders including Ghulam Azam, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, Ali Ahsan Mujaheed, Abdul Kader Mollah, Kamaruzzaman and Shafiqur Rahman. They were detained and now facing charges of war crimes during Liberation War in 1971.
As part of their plan, they also went on rampage, attacks on law enforcers and vandalised and torched unspecified number of motor vehicles in the capital and elsewhere the country. At least eight police men, including several officers, were killed and more than 300 other law enforcers injured, 40 of them critically across the country.
On November 5, the Jamaat-Shibir men went on rampage and started attacking police men, vandalising and torching motor vehicles in the capital’s Malibagh, Motijheel, Paltan and Bijoynagar area, leaving many people including some policemen injured. Later, the vandalism also spread through other parts of the country.
Since then, law enforcers went for action against them through massive arrests of its leaders and activists from different parts of the country, including the capital. In such a situation, unprecedented security measures were taken throughout the country, especially in capital Dhaka. Besides, the law enforcers have been asked to remain alert against any type of such “sudden attack and sabotage” like rampage, arson and vandalism.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker said, “None involved in any kind of terrorist activities including attacking on law enforcers would be spared”.
Terming law enforcers “safeguards of the country”, the police chief said “We are now more cautious about any of such attacks and promised-bound to save life and property of the common people.“
