Bangladesh: Islam can’t be established by gunrunners: Matia Chowdhury
Sherpur, Apr 10 (UNB) - Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury on Wednesday said Islam cannot be established by those who are indulged in illegal arms business.
“Ten truckloads of weapons were unloaded in Chittagong during the tenure of Khaleda-Nizami’s alliance government. Now, they are supporting Hefejat-e-Islam,” she said while addressing a rally on the Poragaon Union Parishad premises in Nalitabari upazila.
The programme was arranged for distributing fertiliser and seeds of aus motivation package among small and marginal farmers and VGF rice among the poor.
Matia accused the BNP-Jamaat alliance of hatching conspiracy to hinder the country’s development. “Their main objective is to halt the ongoing trial of the war criminals and go to power at any cost.”
Terming the war crimes trial an ‘electoral pledge of Awami League’, the minister said: “When the trial began, Khaleda remained silent. As the verdicts in the war crimes cases were delivered, she opposed the verdicts. Why should the trial be stopped? We aren’t holding closed-door trial; rather the trial is being held openly.”
District council administrator Advocate Abdul Halim, deputy commissioner Zakir Hossain and other officials were present.
