Decision to hang Prof. Bhullar unfortunate and political: Jasbir Singh Bhullar
~~By Harish Dido
FEROZEPUR: The decision of the Supreme Court on Friday declining to convert the death sentence awarded to Prof. Bhullar into life imprisonment, is very unfortunate with the result the hearts of the Sikh community were scratched and they are feeling themselves as cheated.

Bhai Jasbir Singh Bhullar, District Presdient, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) commenting on the decision of the Supreme Court said these words while talking to the media persons. He said, the decision of the court is not judicial but political one.
It is pertinent to mention here that Prof Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar. Prof. Bhullar, who was sentenced to death by a trial court in Delhi on 25th August 2001 under the infamous draconian Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA) act, is getting the support of Sikh Organizations, to cancel the death sentence awarded to him in the car bomb case in 1993 with intention to kill Maninderjit Singh Bitta, chairman of the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF), and former chief of the Indian Youth Congress. Pal Singh Bhullar is a convict on death row in India. He was found guilty of killing 9 by standers in a 1993 car bombing intended to kill Maninderjeet Singh Bitta, on September 11, 1993 when a car bomb exploded outside the offices of the India Youth Congress on Raisina Road in New Delhi and sentenced to death by hanging by split decision.

Bhai Jasbir Singh Bhullar further said that the Centre Government by using its influence over the judiciary is awarding the death sentences to the Sikhs on the political basis. Prof. Bhullar was brought back from Germany with a promise that the government will not award the punishment of death sentence. There is not even single eye witness of the total 133 witnesses produced in the court of all law. Out of three judge’s bench, the chief judge says that Prof. Bhullar cannot be awarded the punishment of death sentence and in such circumstances, it looks that the same is being awarded to please the feelings of the majority community of Hindus.

Bohar Singh Thind, District Vice President said, Prof. Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar is under distress for the last 17-18 years in jail cells and he has lost his mental balance. The Indian Government is only bent upon not only to give punishment to a person who has lost his balance but seems to be in a mood to teach a lesson to the Sikh community by giving the death sentence.

Avtar Singh Uppal, District General Secretary said, It looks as if the decision to hang Prof. Bhullar is to be converted into a political battle. All the Sikh Organisations should assemble at one platform to present his case before the central government, he added.
