Hartal ends with violence, vandalism;BCL leader killed in Tangail

DHAKA: The countrywide two days hartal, enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance, ended with  incidents of violence in different part of the country that left a BCL leader dead in Tangail on Tuesday.

Joint secretary of Gopalpur upazila unit of BCL, Imran Sarker, 20, was killed during the clashes between Awami League and BNP supporters in Tangail.

In the capital, several cocktails exploded at Motijheel, Farmgate, Mirpur Stadium, Jatrabari and Jurain in the morning.

Hartal supporters vandalized some vehicles in Khilgaon and Shahjadpur areas.

Pro-hartal activists brought some processions at Mirpur area in the morning.

Violence were also reported from outside district including Moulvibazar, Rajshahi, Natore and Chittagong.

In Moulvibazar, Dhaka-Sylhet rail link suspended from 4 am while hartal supporters uproots the rail-line near Kulaura Railway Station.

In Natore, the pickets halted vehicular movement on Rajshahi-Dhaka bypass near Bonbellgharia Mohila College area by burning tyres and  putting bricks. The pickets left the scene when police chased them.
Later, police removed barricade from there.

In Rajshahi, at least 25 people including three cops were injured in clashes between hartal supporters and law enforcer in city Tuesday morning.

In Binodpur area of Rajshahi, 15 people including Motihar zone Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Police, Hasnat were injured when police and Shibir activists locked into clashes this morning.

Police arrested 70 people from the area.

In another incident, at least 10 people were injured when BNP supporters locked into clashes with police in Kadirganj area.

The clashes occurred when the activists of BNP led by its joint secretary general Mijanur Rahman Minu brought out a pro-hartal procession in the city and locked into clashes with law enforcers.

BNP said 10 activists of the party were injured in police action.

In Chittagong, hartal supporters put barricade on Dhaka-Chittagong highway. A chase and counter-chase took place between the pro-hartal activists and police when police tried to free the highway.

A large number of law enforcers have been deployed at the key points of the city.

Like other hartal days, law enforcers cordoned off the BNP’s head office in Nayapalton since early morning.

The opposition alliance called the general strike after police raided the BNP central office on March 11 and arrested over 150 leaders and activists of the party, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and vice chairmen Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque and BNP joint secretaries general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman.

The alliance had given the government an ultimatum to release the leaders and activists by Thursday. Though three of the BNP leaders-- Mirza Fakhrul, Khoka and Altaf Hossain -- were released the following
day, the remaining leaders and workers sent to jail.
