KUALA TERENGGANU: A man sliced off his father's penis and then his own after his family refused to heed his long lecture that the world was coming to an end.

His mother watched helplessly as her 40-year-old son did his morbid act, purportedly due to a religious belief, at their home in Felda Kerteh 6 in Dungun, about 68km from here.

The man also tried to cut off the private parts of his brother-in-law, who managed to flee with other frightened family members from the house after the gory early morning incident yesterday.

Both the man and his 67-year-old father have been admitted to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital here, where doctors are attempting to reattach the severed private parts.

Police said that although the suspect did not have a history of mental illness, he was believed to have been influenced by a false religious belief he picked up from the Internet.

The suspect, a mechanic in Balakong, Selangor, had returned to his parents' village home a week earlier.

On Saturday morning, he called his family members, including his sister's family in Pahang, to gather at the house.

When they arrived, he allegedly spent the whole night lecturing them about the apocalypse and, right before them, he started to use his fists and rotan on his father.

The brutal act was purportedly to force his father to cry in order to invoke the spirit of an ancient scholar to save the world.

However, he failed, said Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm K. Manoharan.

At around 1.30am yesterday, after the bruised father had gone to bed, the mechanic stormed into the older man's bedroom with a kitchen knife and used it on the father's private parts.

Manoharan said the suspect then did the same to his own penis, with his mother watching in horror.

Police sped to the house after receiving a call at around 4am and rushed the two injured men to the Dungun Hospital.

They were later transferred to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital here for surgery.
