West Michigan Bengalis Celebrate New Year
ADA, Mich.– One culture in West Michigan is wishing each other a Happy New Year this weekend.
The Bengalis are celebrating their New Year, which officially starts this year on Sunday, April 14th.
More than 300 people marked the special day at Ada Christian School. Lunch was provided and consisted of authentic Bengali food, like rice pilaf and fish curry. There were also sweet desserts which are said to serve as a good omen for the coming year. Guests arrived in traditional dress.
“Our New Year is celebrated with lots of music, dance and open markets as well,” said Tahmina Sharif of the West Michigan Bengali Community. “We greet each other saying, Pohela Baisakh or Happy Bengali New Year.”
The Bengali New Year is celebrated in the countries of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Organizers say there is a big Bengali population scattered around Michigan in places like Flint, Holland and Lansing.
