Thursday, May 16, 2013: Vinay Sharma, 20, one of the suspects in the December 16, 2012, Delhi gang rape case was poisoned inside Tihar jail, his lawyer AP Singh has alleged. The allegations came two months after Ram Singh, the prime accused in the case, was found hanging in his cell.

Sharma was admitted to LNJP hospital on Tuesday after he complained of chest pain.

While his lawyer alleged that he was roughed up and poisoned, jail authorities said Sharma was suffering from high fever.

“He is suffering from acute chest pain and is vomiting blood. His food has been poisoned since the beginning of this month,” said AP Singh, who called it a case of slow poisoning.

Sharma is one of the four in Tihar jail for allegedly raping last year a 23-year-old in a bus, who later succumbed to her injuries.

AP Singh told the special court that Sharma complained about ‘feeling dizzy’ and sometimes ‘becoming unconscious’ after eating his meals. “He was admitted to Tihar clinic and later moved to DDU hospital on May 3. He was then shifted to LNJP on May 13 when his condition worsened,” he said.

The lawyer alleged that Sharma was not being treated properly at the hospital since the doctors were on strike. The court asked the jail authorities if Sharma could be shifted to a private hospital.

Roughed up in Tihar jail

Sources said after the accused in the Delhi gang rape case were sent to Tihar jail, other inmates repeatedly roughed them up for their alleged crime.

The prime accused, Ram Singh, was found hanging on March 11.

The fifth accused, who claimed to be a juvenile, also faced the wrath of inmates in the juvenile home where he was sent.
