Two bloggers who had been arrested over hurting religious sentiments were released on bail on Sunday evening.
The duo walked out of Dhaka Central Jail around 6:30pm, Forman Ali, senior superintendent of the jail, told The Daily Star.
Earlier in the afternoon, a Dhaka court granted them bail in connection with a case filed for posting “derogatory comments about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)” on different platforms of the Internet.
The bloggers are: Subrata Adhikari Shuvo, 24, is a master’s student of Dhaka University while Russel Parvez, 36, is a teacher at an English medium school.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zohirul Haque however did not pass any order on the bail petitions of two other bloggers–Asif Mohiuddin and Moshiur Rahman Biplob–as their lawyers were absent during today’s hearing.
On April 2, law enforcers arrested three bloggers Shuvo, Parvez and Moshiur Rahman Biplob from different areas of the capital for their alleged involvement with the “derogatory posting”.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police picked up blogger Asif Mohiuddin on April 3 in connection with another case filed on the same ground.
The bloggers’ arrest came after a group of Muslim clerics submitted a list of bloggers to the government on March 31 for their allegedly involvement in writing “derogatory comments about religion”.
