Schapelle Corby plea for early release rejected by anti-narcotics agency
SCHAPELLE, May 20, 2013: Corby's bid for freedom has been dealt a blow after Indonesia's anti-narcotics agency opposed her plea for release.

National Narcotics Agency official Benny Mamoto yesterday revealed he had recently written to Indonesia's Minister for Justice and Human Rights to declare the Australian drug smuggler should not be given parole.

The development comes after her hopes of release were boosted in March when the Australian government took the unprecedented step of offering a guarantee to Indonesia that Corby would not breach parole conditions if granted an early release.

Even if she wins parole, Corby will have to live in Bali until 2017, when her jail sentence for smuggling 4kg of marijuana into Bali in a boogie board bag, expires.

Late in March Corby was visited in Kerobokan Prison by Indonesian Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin, who discussed her bid for parole.

The minister warned her about tough new regulations introduced in Indonesia last year that would require Corby to agree to be a "justice collaborator" guarantee she would help police if ever required.
