Hartal continues as Jamaat unleashes violence in Noakhali
Jamaat-Shibir activists continued to unleash violence in Noakhali but the six-hour-long shutdown in Kurigram ended peacefully on Thursday.
BNP enforced the hartal in Noakhali district protesting against Monday’s arrest of party Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farooque and the district unit party president Md Shahjahan.
In Kurigram district, BNP called the shutdown to protest against the arrest of party Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
According to a Daily Star report, the vehicular movement in Noakhali came to a halt afte pickets put barricades on different roads of the town burning tyres and putting logs since the morning.
Hartal supporters also set fire on the Laksham-Noakhali rail track near Maizdi Court Railway Station in the town and burnt different newspapers excluding Bangla daily in the town.
Due to the ongoing violence, all educational institutions and road side shops remained closed in Noakhali.
Awami League and its associate bodies brought out an anti-hartal procession in in Kurigram protesting the hartal in the morning.
Law enforcers on Thursday arrested Alamgir Kabir Chowdhury, chairman of Banshkhali upazila in Chittagong, for allegedly provoking Jamaat-Shibir activists to unleash violence on minority community on February 28, 2013.
According to a Daily Star report, the detainee is also the vice president of South District chapter of BNP.
A joint team of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, district police and Rapid Action Battalion arrested Kabir from his residence in Katalganj at around 3:00am, reports say.
Police charged Kabir for instigating the violence created by Jamaat-Shibir men in Banshkhali upazila. Jamaat-Shibir men unleashed violence after a war crimes tribunal sentenced Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee to death on February 28.
Immediately after Sayedee’s verdict, Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked and vandalised homes, businesses, temples and other settlements of minorities, upazila and court bhabans in Banshkhali upazila.
BNP lawmaker Jafrul Islam Chowdhury of Banshkhali on Thursday said six cases have been filed following the Banshkhali incident but Kabir was not made accused in any of the cases.
Law enforcers arrested Kabir only to harass him, Chowdhury said.
