Sirajganj: At least 60 people were injured in separate clashes between pickets and police during the first hours of daylong hartal in the district town on Tuesday.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced the nationwide hartal today (Tuesday) protesting attacks on its “peaceful rally by police and the ruling party cadres” in Dhaka city on Monday.

Locals said 30 people, including seven policemen, were injured in a fierce clash on New Dhaka Road at Chamrapotti in the town at about 8 am, when police lobbed 50 teargas canisters to disperse hartal supporters while picketing on the road.

During the clash, five shops were also vandalised.

In another clash, 17 people were injured at Simantabazar in Kamarkhand upazila around 8:30am, when police tried to disperse pro-hartal elements as they took position on the west side connecting road of Bangabandhu Bridge.

During the clash, a truck was set ablaze and three more were vandalised.

Besides, a clash between hartal supporters and police left 13 people injured on Sirajganj-Bogra Puritan road in Telkuti area in Sadar upazila at 7:30am.

A CNG-run auto rickshaw and two trucks were vandalised during the fight.
