Law enforcers arrested the chairman of Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong early Thursday on charge of provoking activist s of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir to unleash violence on Hindu community on February 28 that left one killed.

Immediately after the International Crimes Tribunal handed death penalty to Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee for wartime offences, Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked and vandalised houses and temples of Hindu community and upazila and court buildings in Banshkhali.

Detained Alamgir Kabir Chowdhury is vice president of South District chapter of BNP and president of Banshkhali upazila BNP unit, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

A joint team of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, district police and Rapid Action Battalion-7 arrested Kabir at his Katalganj residence in the city around 3:00am, said Md Iltutmish, additional superintendent of police (Chittagong South zone).

Kabir has been arrested for instigating the violence created by Jamaat-Shibir men in Banshkhali upazila following the verdict of Sayedee on February 28, he said.

The ASP however did not elaborate it.

Contacted, BNP lawmaker Jafrul Islam Chowdhury of Banshkhali on Thursday said six cases have been filed following the Banshkhali incident but Kabir was not made accused in any of the cases.

Law enforcers arrested Kabir only to harass him, Chowdhury said.
