Cop killed in gunfight with Jamaat men in Khulna
A police constable was killed in a gunfight with the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, in Koira upazila of Khulna early Sunday.

The gunfight occurred around 1:00am when a police team was returning after arresting three local Jamaat leaders.

The Jamaat leaders were accused in three cases filed in connection with the incidents of violence unleashed by Jamaat Shibir men between February 28 and March 5.

The cases were filed against 1,000 Jamaat-Shibir men with Koira Police Station following attacks on law enforcers.

Jamaat Shibir men are also accused of torching and looting several houses of the members of the Hindu community in Amadi union of the upazila, said Bazlur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Victim Mofizur Rahman, 48, is son of Abdus Samad of Lohagara upazila in Narail, reports our Khulna correspondent.

Describing the incident, the Koira OC said, a team of police raided Golkhali village and arrested the three local Jamaat leaders in connection with the cases.

As the team along with the accused was returning to the police station, around 2,000 marauding activists of Jamaat-Shibir swooped on the law enforcers to snatch the accused away.

At one stage, the Jamaat-Shibir men opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate with bullets.

During the gunfight, Mofizur sustained bullet injury in his leg.

He was rushed to Koira Upazila health Complex where duty doctor pronounced him dead.

Golam Abdur Rauf, superintendent of police in Khulna, said the police constable died due to excessive bleeding as Golkhali village, the scene of occurrence, situated in a remote area adjacent to the Sundarbans.

During the gunfight, the Jamaat-Shibir men managed to snatch two of the three arrestees.
