Shibir bombs cops in Rajshahi, 5 hurt
62 picked up for ‘link’ with the bomb attack
At least five policemen, including an assistant commissioner, were critically injured in Rajshahi city when Islami Chhatra Shibir activists hurled about 15 bombs at them during hartal hours on Tuesday.

Law enforcers picked up 62 people from the adjacent areas immediate after the attack at Mondolermore in Binodpur Bazar area.

The incident occurred when law enforcers resisted a Shibir procession in support of the hartal around 6:00am, said Abdul Mazid, officer in-charge (investigation) of Motihar Police Station.

Intercepted by the cops, the Shibir men exploded at least 10 powerful homemade bombs and several cocktails targeting the law enforcers from the rooftop of surrounding houses and messes.

Assistant Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Abul Hasnat was critically wounded by bomb splinters, said RMP Commissioner SM Muniruzzaman.

He was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital with severe head injuries.

Four other injured police constables were rushed to Rajshahi Police Lines Hospital.

Police and Rapid Action Battalion members fired over 100 teargas shells, rubber bullets and gunshots to take the situation under control.

Law enforcers picked up 59 people from several houses and messes in the area.

Police also detained three house owners– Abdul Haque, a former teacher of Rajshahi University, Advocate Khurshedul Alam, a former police officer, and Imdadul Haque — for allowing Shibir men to use the rooftop for attacking the law enforcers, the RMP commissioner said.
