Shahbagh protesters firm on March 13 Ctg rallies
Dhaka, Mar 10: Defying the threat of a pro-Islamic party that called a hartal in Chittagong on Wednesday, organisers of the Ganajagoron Mancha said they would hold the rally in the port city as scheduled. The Hefajat-e-Islami Bangladesh has called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Chittagong on March 13, the day Ganajagaran Mancha is set to hold two rallies – one at Chittagong University at 11am and the other in front of Chittagong Press Club at 3pm. Hefajat-e-Islami joint secretary general Moinuddin Ruhi said the “strike in Chittagong has been called to resist Shahbagh’s atheist bloggers who show disrespect to Islam.”
However, addressing the Uttara rally on Sunday, Ganojagoran Mancha spokesperson Dr Imran H Sarkar called upon the government to ensure security to countrymen, as well as protesters, who have been waging a movement against the Jamaat-Shibir.
“We have been telling the government to ensure security for those who are engaged in the movement since February 5. Even after how the Jamaat Shibir activists are killing our men?” asked Sarkar. At the same time, blogger Imran also called upon the government to impose a ban on Jamaat politics immediately. “There is no alternative to imposing a ban on Jamaat politics,” he said.
Criticizing the killing of Ahmed Miraz and Tanvir Mohammad Towki, Imran alleged that Jamaat-Shibir men were responsible for these murders.
Ahmed Miraz, the younger brother of freedom fighter and a prosecution witness in Ghulam Azam case in war crimes trial Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul, and Tanvir Mohammad Towki, son of Narayanganj Ganajagaran Mancha convener Rafiur Rabbi, were killed brutally by miscreants.
Student leaders at the Uttara rally said Jamaat e Islami and its students’ wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, are attacking protestors and their families.
Shahbagh protests, spearheaded by the youths, began on February 5 hours after International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Jamaat’s assistant general secretary Abdul Quader Molla to life in prison. They were demanding death penalty for all war criminals.
Students’ union president SM Shubho, Chhatra Maitree president, Bappaditya Basu, Chhatra League general secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Alam, the JSD-backed Chhatra League general secretary Shamsul Islam, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front general secretary Mehedi Hasan, Biplabi Chhatra Maitree president Abdur Rauf, Chhatra Oikya Forum convener Sohan Sobhan and Chhatra Federation office secretary Samia Rahman spoke at
the rally.
The rally began with the singing of the national anthem. Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, Sangiskritik Union, Samageet and others sang a number of songs prior to the starting of the rally.
After concluding his speech, blogger Imran H Sarker administrated an oath to resist the Jamaat-Shibir and called upon the people to boycott all Jamaat-backed social and financial institutions and media outlets.
On the other hand, leaders of port city’s Jamal Khan “Ganajagoron Moncha” (Rousing Stage) are adamant to hold the scheduled grand rally on March 13 at Jamal Khan road, where the Shahbag movement leaders are scheduled to attend, defying the hartal called by Hefajate Islam on the day in Chittagong.
The grand rally was supposed to be held at the city’s historical Laldighi Maidan at 3:00 pm on the day. But the leaders of Chittagong have shifted the venue to Jamal Khan Road.
Sharif Chowhan, convener of Jamal Khan Ganajagoron Moncha, told The Independent that they would hold the grand rally on the day and make it a grand success at any cost rejecting the hartal of the Islamist organization.
“We’ve already urged people from all walks of life, irrespective of age, sex and class, to converge on Jamal Khan Road like the previous days of the ongoing movement here,” he added. He said the Jamal Khan Ganajagoron Moncha demonstrators are ready to face the fanatics and foil their hartal in Chittagong.
Regarding the security issue, Sharif said they will hold a meeting with the authorities concerned, including Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) commissioner, on Monday, to seek required security for the leaders of Shahbag movement in Chittagong and the Jamal Khan Ganajagoron Moncha on March 13.
On the other hand, leaders and activists of Hefajate Islam and its like-minded Islamist organizations have announced to resist the Shahbag movement leaders in Chittagong at any cost on March 13.
Hefajat-e-Islami has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Chittagong on March 13 to resist the Shahbag movement leaders here terming them as atheist and enemy of Islam.
According to the reports of an intelligence agency, Hefajat-e-Islami and its like-minded Islamist organizations are planning to block rail, road and river routes of Chittagong on March 13 in a bid to check the entry of Shahbagh movement leaders in Chittagong.
According to the plans of Hefajate Islam, hundreds of activists of the islamist organization will block the Chittagong-Hathajari Road and Chittagong-Chittagong University (CU) rail tracks to foil the scheduled programme of Shahbag movement leaders on the CU campus in the morning on March 13.
At the same time, activists of the organization will block other roads, rail and river routes leading to Chittagong.
